Global Net Censorship Growing – Be it Skype, offensive content, or Google Maps

Speaking of filtering content, the BBC says that the blocking of VoIP clients like Skype, content deemed offensive and applications such as Google Maps is on the rise worldwide. Justification for such bans are increasingly framed as “securing intellectual property rights,” “protecting national security,” “preserving cultural norms and religious values” and “shielding children from pornography and exploitation,” says the Open Net Initiative. The study of thousands of websites across 120 ISPs found 25 of 41 countries surveyed showed evidence of content filtering.
