Stephenson Expands His Reign - AT&T’s $2.8 billion acquisition of Dobson

Site Feeds, VoIP, broadbandreports.com No Comments »

Dobson Communications, a mobile phone service provider under Cellular One, has been purchased by AT&T for almost $3 billion. The reason it s worth so much: the purchase will add coverage in rural areas to AT&T’s wireless network and save the company $2.5 billion in roaming costs and overhead expenses. But perhaps more valuable is that the acquisition continues to expand the reach of AT&T, showing that CEO Randall Stephenson is following in the footsteps of Ed Whitacre who orchestrated $200 billion in takeovers during his time as CEO. Perhaps Stephenson is setting the stage for a sweet retirement deal?

Radio Silence Only Temporary … For Now - SoundExchange offers better deal to webcasters

Site Feeds, VoIP, broadbandreports.com No Comments »

After a long week, webcasters protesting royalty rate hikes may have gained some ground, albeit only a little bit. First, there was the Day of Silence protest that gained some media attention. Then, the U.S. House Small Business Committee conducted a hearing to consider overturning the decisions on how rate fees are determined. The result of that hearing was the decision that Congress wouldn t intervene in the issue, leaving webcasters and the music industry to try to work on a compromise on their own. Surprisingly, SoundExchange has issued a press release indicating a willingness to cap some of the minimum fees for webcasters. It s not a great deal; it only lasts through 2008 and was a decision made by SoundExchange without negotiation. But it s something. The webcasters won’t be going permanently silent yet.

Friday (iPhone) Open (iPhone) Thread - Worship at the church of Apple…

att=1181494,r We spent a few moments talking to some of the 75 or so people waiting in line in Manhattan for something they were calling an “iPhone.” “iSmarter” New Yorkers apparently avoided the hassle of the Apple Mega Circus and waited in a more genteel way at the 86th street AT&T store between 2nd and 3rd avenues.

att=1181555,l We decided to track the purchase process by following two iPhone devotees, Mark Hall and Lee Bonano (a Dslreports.com user), who avoided multi-day camping and queued in the line at 9:30 this morning. At 4:30 this afternoon, the line was only about 50 people deep.

Amazing when you consider the blocks-long line in midtown at the Apple Store. The well-geared Hall and Bonano called the line almost “pleasant”, with no Ebayers, paid place holders, or fist fights. Some were confused why the two were camped in front of Burger King, thus the sign.

Less fun was the purchasing process; a clunky affair whereby only a few people were allowed in the store at a time. The first ten in

Funds are officially in the bank for Lafayette, Lousiana’s citywide fiber network, which has taken years to get off the ground due to constant legal & PR battles with local incumbents Cox & BellSouth. $110 million in funding has finally been obtained, though it’s going to take another 18 months before the first customers get service. The city says everybody who wants service should have it two years after those initial customers come online.
