Dobson Communications, a mobile phone service provider under Cellular One, has been purchased by AT&T for almost $3 billion. The reason it s worth so much: the purchase will add coverage in rural areas to AT&T’s wireless network and save the company $2.5 billion in roaming costs and overhead expenses. But perhaps more valuable is that the acquisition continues to expand the reach of AT&T, showing that CEO Randall Stephenson is following in the footsteps of Ed Whitacre who orchestrated $200 billion in takeovers during his time as CEO. Perhaps Stephenson is setting the stage for a sweet retirement deal?
