White Spaces and Wireless Broadband - Conference to open up innovative possibilities
Site Feeds, VoIP, broadbandreports.com September 29th, 2007
The opening up of spectrum white spaces has spurred the proliferation of numerous ideas about how to best use that space. The White Spaces Coalition is working on getting FCC approval for their spectrum-seeking device, Google has proposed real-time auction use of the spectrum and other innovators are getting their ideas prepared to get involved in the game. All of these creative ideas are making it difficult for the people in charge to determine the best way to utilize the spectrum. A one-day event to be held in Washington D.C. next week will spark more conversation to add to the topic. The lengthy name of the event tells all about its purpose: Driving Wireless Broadband and Innovation (How Opening Up Unused White Spaces on the Airwaves Will Drive Wireless Innovation) .

I do some work with the NAB, and I think opening up the white spaces is a terrible idea. Tests have proven that broadcasting in the interim space disrupts the content on nearby channels. It’s like when two radio stations overlap and you have cross-talk. Why would be ever want that for TV?
