The cable industry continues to fight with the NFL Network over the cost of carrying the channel. As it stands, Time Warner Cable, Comcast, Charter and Cablevision have either refused to carry the channel or charge a premium for it. The dispute will receive renewed attention on Thanksgiving, once the channel starts their exclusive broadcast of eight regular season games.
Verizon, who already offers the network via FiOSTV, today announced that they’ll be offering broadband customers those eight games streamed online, for free. The “NFL Network Game Extra service” is available to customers who subscribe to either Verizon FiOS or Verizon DSL, plus either Verizon FiOS TV or DIRECTV through Verizon. We mentioned that this system was in testing last fall. Traditionally the NFL has been significantly behind Major League Baseball when it came to offering games online. The NFL, still locked into their exclusive relationship with DirecTV, traditionally only offered on-line game viewing if you live outside North America.
