Qualcomm / Nokia Settle Patent Dispute – Fifteen-year deal works out for both sides

Qualcomm and Nokia have been in court battling each other regarding patents for awhile now. As of this week, they have settled their disputes in a move that seems to have benefits to them both.

“Nokia will pay less in royalties to Qualcomm perhaps half of what it previously paid under Wednesday’s surprise litigation settlement and 15-year licensing deal, analysts said yesterday. But the complex agreement includes a significant lump sum and the transfer of an undisclosed number of Nokia patents, making it difficult to say which side got the better deal.”

The deal should prevent lawsuits of this kind for the next fifteen years which allows the businesses to each move forward with their independent and joint plans for the future.
