Custom Fitted Bicycles From BMC
Gadgets, Hardware, Site Feeds, Software July 30th, 2008
Swiss bicycle manufacturer BMC has started doing something radically different when it comes to their bicycle line; they are offering bespoke bicycles. Using 3D motion capture technology from New York’s Organic Motion, and a bank of ten high speed cameras, BMC will be able to map the bodies of potential riders and create a bike that is the perfect fit for the rider.
I have never found a bike that fits me perfectly. I usually have to make compromises when it comes to my riding position and that sacrifices both comfort and speed. Getting the right riding position can mean going faster, it can also mean less impact on your body and allow you to ride for longer. For this reason, the thought of a custom built bicycle has me intrigued.
Bicycles can’t get much lighter, in fact, many of the lighter bikes on the market are illegal in the professional circuit and how much improvement can we expect to see from components? A perfectly-sized bicycle could pay performance dividends, that casual cyclists have not seen in a long, long time.
No word on the price of these custom made beauties, but given that the motion capture equipment costs ,000, I would say that the price is probably going to be up there. If you have the bankroll for a serious bike and you want something that performs a little better than your average insanely expensive bike, then this could be worth looking into.
