Before there was U-Verse IPTV, AT&T (or at least a part of her) offered TV services in parts of BellSouth territory. BellSouth had been offering (see website) traditional cable TV service to around 50,000 customers in portions of Georgia, Florida and Alabama, and was conducting IPTV trials before being acquired by AT&T. The service officially went offline in Alabama today, though customers were informed of this earlier this year.
Because BellSouth already had TV experience and had run fiber a little closer to customers in the Southeast, it was assumed that the region would be a quick launching ground for U-Verse. So far, that hasn’t proven to be the case.
Last fall AT&T insisted to me that BellSouth territory was a U-Verse priority, but it’s likely that system integration has proved complicated. AT&T has only launched U-Verse in two BellSouth-territory markets so far: Atlanta and portions of South Florida — though signs of progress are out there. Our users have spotted VRADS in Chattanooga, Tennessee, as well as throughout the Carolinas.
