Verizon To Offer Femtocells in 2009 – About to begin test, ’09 commercial launch likely

Femtocells essentially create a micro cell tower in your home that improves wireless coverage and allows you to make calls over your broadband connection. It’s expected that most major incumbents, including cable operators like Comcast, should begin deploying the technology next year. “We are looking at femtocell technology and will soon be performing user tests,” a company spokesman tells Unstrung. “We could well have a product on the market early next year, but we have made no public announcements about that yet.” A Samsung developed “UbiCell” femtocell product is supposedly already registered with the FCC.
