Sony PSP 5.02 Firmware Update Unleashed

Sony Playstation 5.02 Firmware Update

I can remember installing the Japanese version of the 2.0 firmware in order to get access to the web browser on my PSP way back in July 2005. Released on November 20th and now at version 5.02, a rapid update from 5.0/5.01 adds just a few features mostly around updating the Playstation store experience and a couple of other PSP-3001 series specific options.

Too bad I’m sticking with my PSP-2001 “slim” for now. Read more at the Playstation.com website.

Update: Sony PSP 5.03 firmware update released. It’s a security update that closes up a couple of gaps. Do not upgrade if you want to use custom firmware.

“Better” is subjective. So far, it’s just added functionality around the Playstation Store. If you were at 5.x already, you have most of what the fuss was about. And if you’re heavy into homebrew, I’d say wait.

That’s because you need the DarkAlex series of firmware for “those types” of games.

For clarification, the 5.02 firmware is for people that actually buy the games. If you want to download games that don’t come from the PlayStation Online Store… then seek out the home brew solutions.

Out of habit, I’ve downloaded movies from the computer, used a proper converter for it – PSP Video 9 was my favorite – and then moved it over from the desktop to the PSP via USB. Not exactly the most “friendly” way, but all conversions work that way. Leaving it up to Google Video or other sites – most zip them up anyway – just didn’t work out for me… ever.

just updated my kids psp-2004 to firmware 5.02, and the whole thing is f#%@ed. Start button wont work, the virtual keyboard wont work, the home button wont work.
Reason for update was the new lego batman game required an update, so i did the network update and wham!!! all games are now jeopardized!!!

any help would be great, any way to reset the hardware???? anything plz HELP!!!

Amrit… no. If you have a PSP 2000, that’s the firmware it will remain. Same if you have a PSP 3000, et al. Your screen will stay the same.

Do you mean uninstall to change the version or just delete the download after you’ve installed it? If it’s the latter, you just go to your Game icon in the crossbar, scroll down to the Memory Stick, highlight the 5.02 downloaded update, and then hit triangle, then choose delete.

If you want to downgrade or do any of the custom firmware stuff, I seriously can’t help you there.

Tom, there’s no version 5.2. Only 5.02. It won’t turn on, contact Sony. If it’s the blue Madden PSP, you’d still be covered. Easily.

David, Remove 5.02? Read above. Or search for PSP downgrade. The Pandora battery hack still works, it seems.

phillip that depends on what PSP you have. If you have the Phat, or the 1001, you need to search on google Lightmp3 Phat. If you have the Light, or 2001, you need to search on google Lightmp3 Slim.

Believe it or not each of these programs and applications are made to satisfy both versions of the PSP. I learned that trick. You need to make sure that when you’re downloading the application it is compatible with your PSP version.

I’m sure you have no probelm figuring out what PSP version you have. Hope I helped.

Plus I love firmware 5.02. I hhave had no problems with it so far.

My psp can’t even find the 5.02 version, it just tells me 5.01 is the latest version. I don’t know if it matters, but i recently got a new memory stick and it hasn’t updated since then. Any ideas?

Guys, i have PSP 2001 with OFW v5.0.2 .. now, as per my research, you cannot Downgrade or use CFW with this specific firmware .. I am looking for some clear answers because i can’t play downloaded games .. KINDLY answer me if there is INDEED a solution to this issue? Do we have a hack for this certain motherboard/firmware? If you’re a regular player of games from your UMD only, just like me, then going to 5.02 has not harmed anything for me. I also have a PSP Slim – 2000 series – and it works just fine for me.

I’ve not tested the TV output. Doubtful it’ll be improved since the hardware is the same.

What’s full of shit? That you can’t use a system of upgrades that’s been in place for the last few years successfully?

Or that you didn’t pay attention to fact that if you wanted to keep playing homebrew and/or games from your memory card that an “official” upgrade has NEVER been the way to go since 2006?

Seriously. As a person that plays only store bought games, this upgrade was straight-forward. If you’re deeply entrenched into the custom firmware scene, you know how to continue that route.

Anyway, the 5.02 upgrade (for me) worked on a 2000, not a phat (fat).

Not the one sourced from Sony, Ryan. The 5.00 m33-6 firmware (just Google for it) via Dark Alex (and that scene) can play downloaded games.

This might not be the place, but maybe someone can point me in the right direction.

I just bought a used PSP from an estate sale, and only because I thought it was too good of a deal to pass up…(I think they thought it was broken, but it isn’t)..How do I find out what version I have, and is there a download available for the instruction booklet?

I have no clue as how this works, if there are different types of games and movies, or even if I need some extra accessories. All I have is the game and the A/C cord to recharge the battery.

Can someone help or let me know about any sites that can walk me through…I would at least like to know how to figure out which version I have so I can buy some games for my daughter online.

No, you cannot download games while using 5.02, 5.03 or just about any firmware that you download and install from Sony. Want to download games, custom firmware – and ffs, read above.

If you have to ask, then I’d say don’t get it. Most of the people above are only interested in hacked firmware and downloaded games – 5.02 isn’t for you at all. As it stands, I only play official releases and 5.03 is worth it.

There is a way to get rid of the 5.02 update, i recommend to downgrade to version 1.5 to play homebrewgames, search on google for downgrades.
