Just say no to the Apple iPad - not impressed, it's not powerful enough, doesn't do much more than an iPhone

UPDATE: Due to some “angry e-mails”, I truly ask that if you have some comments, feel free to leave some comments. I’ll respond to each and every one of them. Guaranteed. Even the hate mail…

This almost pains me to write this rant… okay, actually it doesn’t.

I’ve owned the original Apple iPhone, currently own the iPhone3G, resisted upgrading to the iPhone 3GS and I’m typing this while using an Apple aluminum keyboard with the numpad on my Apple Mac Mini, and later today I’ll pack up my MacBook and probably go out elsewhere to do some work away from the home office. I’ve owned four iterations of the Apple iPod before settling in my gasp, horror Microsoft Zune 120gb, but that’s a different story.

So I’ve paid my dues heavily to Apple by shoving more of my hard-earned money to the Apple hype machine that delivered products that thought different, just “worked” and above all, were not the PC norm.

But on January 27th, Apple’s lead man Steve Jobs showed the world perhaps the worst kept secret, the Apple iPad. A 9.7″, 1024 by 768 tablet that has a P.A. Semiconductor A4 processor – that buyout of P.A. Semiconductors in April 2008 makes sense now, doesn’t it? – that’s based off of ARM A9 CPU architecture, which means that this isn’t an Intel x86 based tablet much like their laptop or desktop offerings and closer to… well, their Apple iPhone instead.

Yep, this is for all intents and purposes a huge ass Apple iPhone which means absolutely no multi-tasking – one app at a time only at the current version of the OS. Sure, Apple might update the OS to allow for some type of multi-tasking, but as it stands it’s only a serial tasking product. Not cool if you’re wanting to surf, copy and paste, then resume your Apple iWork project? Only one thing at a time.

It doesn’t have Adobe Flash. So that means websites like the New York Times, Google Analytics, Hulu, Joost or YouTube or Vimeo will not work either. Yet, Jobs stated that the Apple iPad offered the best browsing experience. Not so. Sure, YouTube and Vimeo are testing HTML5 versions of their players, but even that’s a battle because the video tag in HTML5 isn’t yet settled and might not be for a while – as a standard that is. So… yet again Apple snubs Adobe Flash.

It uses the same applications as your Apple iPhone. On the surface, this is a good thing. I don’t have to buy any new apps, I can buy my apps once and use them on my iPhone and on my iPad. But… it means that I’m tethered to the iTunes Music Store yet again. It’s a great ecosystem for apps, but to be honest I have some apps that will never show up… like Microsoft Office for starters. Or maybe Hulu. Again… I’m stuck with a closed platform that’s rather limited.

And ultimately, you cannot remove/replace the battery, once you buy one edition of the Apple iPad – with or without 3G – you’re stuck. You will have to buy another Apple iPad because you cannot upgrade it. You cannot install files from another machine, device, DVD drive. – you have to do it solely through iTunes Music Store, which is fine, but you’re no longer dealing with a tablet in the previously known sense of the word tablet.

And you cannot make cellphone calls from it. But through the magic of Skype, Fring, and Beejive IM, you can still talk with people. But… not in the same way of a cellphone. The fact the Apple iPad doesn’t have a forward facing camera makes teleconferences another problem too. Thanks Steve, you forgot to “one more thing” that, didn’t you?

This thing is nothing more than just a huge Apple iPhone. And since I already have an iPhone, I’d rather just hold my iPhone closer to my face and call it an Apple iPad. I’m not impressed, as a person that really didn’t expect anything, I can still say that I’m disappointed and even if I was given one for free take the hint, send me one, I’ll review/test it, the pricepoint happens to be one serious positive, it starts at $499 for wi-fi only – I probably would not use it any more than my Nokia N810, also called an internet tablet.

It’ll be a consumer hit to those that didn’t yet purchase an Amazon Kindle or Barnes & Noble nook, and the premise of buying and reading books on the Apple iPad is another, besides pricepoint, redeeming quality. But as a power user, a tinkerer, a person that never purchased nor wanted a Kindle or nook… I’ll pass.

Just say no to the Apple iPad.

I couldn’t agree more. The iPad is a huge piece of fail.

Then again, I can’t wait until I see the first one out at a coffee shop and I’ll ask them if they can show me Hulu on it…and then the NYT news….and then…walk away

Me too!

Even though I like the size – it would be something great for around the house or for quickly checking a few e-mails, I just don’t like the iPad. It doesn’t fit any needs that I want. Not pocketable, not powerful enough, and just duplicates what my iPhone already does.

Only a serious dumbass would try to pass this off as an editorial. You must have anger issues because Apple didn’t do what you wanted to do; they’re following what Steve Jobs is doing. And he’s capable of doing more than you definitely are.

So hate on the Apple Ipad. It will sell more than anything else. I will be prepurcahsing my Ipad by this weekend.

Thanks, but the dumbass remark is probably more true than false. But it’s not because I dislike what Steve Jobs has done. But it’s because more could have been done. Aren’t you tired of “just enough” functionality? Imagine a true tablet with a webcam upfront. You would have the ability to use video Skype – where is video iChat on the mobile Apple OS platform anyway!? – or you would have the ability to do more than read only a website, or read your e-mail… one application at a time.

Multi-tasking would have been great. Didn’t happen. Video conferencing would have been great. Didn’t happen. A more powerful processor – 10 hours out of an ARM based processor isn’t too much of a stretch, but it’s only slightly faster than a standard fare iPhone. And ultimately it doesn’t do more than an iPhone currently does. I’m aware this might change in the future, but it’s not true right now.

Good luck with your pre-purchase and future purchase. I’m sure you’ll be happy with it. I’m just demanding a bit more out of something that could/might/should replace my concept of an internet tablet.

And this post just reinforces my point over at Studiowhiz – you are NOT the target audience. The iPad is not intended for you, you are thinking of the laptop range – why do you need an iPad? You don’t – between your iPhone & MacBook you are covered .. For our family however there is a gap between our iMac & my iPhone … a gap that a simple, web ready device can fill.

Oh and the flash thing? The rest of the world can’t use HULU so whateva – the other sites (news & media) all provide rich content outside of flash so no big deal. Very few sites I visit outside of YouTube use flash these days – so that argument is wearing thin!

You mean this article over at Studiowhiz?

I agree that I’m not the current target of the iPad, but I could have been. Just three small additions and I would be able to replace my Nokia N810. Instead, I got a full-colored eBook reader where I have to get the majority, if not all of my books via the more expensive, in some cases, iTunes Music Store.

Pass.

I keep thinking from NZ – I don’t mind the book store model they propose – it’s a LOT cheaper than anything else here …

One thing I will add – Courier – Now is Microsofts opportunity to own this space!!

I doubt that Courier will do anything. Just like Surface, just like Origami. MS won’t do much in this area until it’s far too late.

This is the best thing I’ve seen in awhile. (The article and the hate mail/comments.) Seems like people truly believe Jobs is God.

It may do very well or it may not, but the iPad is truly not for the power user/tinkerer.

BTW check out the last item on this Top 10 list….

Ha ha ha, Surface… Origami.

I won’t go deep into the Cult of Mac stuff – I mean, I DO actually use and like OS X and I own an iPhone, but I do NOT follow the Cult of Mac by no means – but yeah… that’s funny.

Seems like the hate has died down and I’m getting the people that agree mostly with what I said.

What’s the use of a rant without the hate though!? Oh well… I’ll add more fuel to the fire in a bit ;)

I agree with you completely on the iPad. I knew it was gonna flop from the minute there was even a rumor of a tablet by Apple. Now mostly I am a PC type of person cause well….. that is just how I was raised (I build my own computers, try doing that with Apple) but I thought it was great when they came out with the iPod. Now they are just trying to stretch out there success and eventually they are just gonna blow it and only the REALLY die hard fans are going to buy from Apple. I think that this may be the start down that road.

I’m glad I’m not the only one not sold on the hype. Watching Jobs try to sell this thing with his keynote address was just painful, he clearly didn’t buy the crap he hype he was spewing. Like it’s been said over and over, this thing is just an over sized ipod touch and without the features already named it has little more use. Sure, the thing has a nice big screen, but that loss in portability, and it’s relatively large price tag hardly make it seem worth it. Honestly though, it’s not a bad product, it’s just not great which is what many have come to expect from mac. It reminds me of Cars; after Toy Story, it’s sequel, and a slew of other fantastic movies Cars, an ok movie, was just a massive let down from Pixar.

The Internet has come a long way since its inception. There are now several different ways to get an internet connection. One can do this by inserting wireless internet card in computer or can use DSL. Apart from this, internet phones and ip phones are there as well to help people connect internet through phones. Internet telephony is not the last option available, wireless internet providers are there as well to offer internet connectivity.
