Sony Playstation 5.02 Firmware Update

I can remember installing the Japanese version of the 2.0 firmware in order to get access to the web browser on my PSP way back in July 2005. Released on November 20th and now at version 5.02, a rapid update from 5.0/5.01 adds just a few features mostly around updating the Playstation store experience and a couple of other PSP-3001 series specific options.

Too bad I’m sticking with my PSP-2001 “slim” for now. Read more at the Playstation.com website.

Sony PS3 2.50 Firmware Update for North America released

Just right before I went to sleep, I decided to fire up NBA 2K9 and was prompted to update to the new 2.50 firmware. The cool bits, my PS3 can now finally view Adobe Flash Player 9 material.

Erm. Great. I don’t even like using the browser to view the PlayStation Store for free downloads. Perhaps now things will be better. Also, the Sony PSP is up for a version 5.0 upgrade - up from 4.05 today too.

Update: 01:44am EST (GMT-5) and the PSP update is still not showing up for me.

Update: 01:50am EST (GMT-5) and version 5.0 is finally showing up for me.

Rumor: New Tony Hawk Game For The DS Could Include Motion Sensor Controls

According to gaming site Maxconsole, the next Tony Hawk game for the Nintendo DS could incorporate a motion and tilt sensing control scheme.

A new game has appeared at the Australia Ratings Classificatiosn board (OFLC) and it’s called “Tony Hawk’s Motion’ which carries a G rating. Activision has previously said that this game will launch a with a new technology that has not been seen on the DS yet. So we’re speculating that such a technology could be a motion/titlt sensor…

Now I’m not entirely sure how big the motion & tilt sensing hardware is, but I assume it will be incorporated into a peripheral that needs to be inserted in the Nintendo DS’s GBA slot, rather than in the DS game cartridge itself. The rumor also leads to speculation about whether or not the game will be seeing a release for the motion & tilt sensing iPhone too, since I’m sure most of us have had our fill of Super Monkey Ball.

Illuminated Drum Sticks For Rock Band

Illuminated Drumsticks For Rock Band (Image courtesy The Ant Commandos)
By Andrew Liszewski

If you’re dissatisfied with the stock set of drum sticks that come with Rock Band (where’s the flash?) these illuminated sticks from The Ant Commandos should enhance your pretend rock-star status. (Even if you are just the drummer.) The sticks light up in ‘flame red’ or ‘electric blue’ colors when struck on any surface, and are made of a transparent but durable acrylic material. The sticks also have a larger diameter than the included wooden Rock Band sticks, but I think that’s less of a feature and more of a by-product of them having to accommodate a AAA battery. However, the silicon coated tips are a nice addition and will definitely help reduce the amount of noise while you wail away on your fake drum set.

The Flame Red and Electric Blue Illuminated Drum Sticks are available in separate sets from The Ant Commandos for .99.

The Games We Played - Skate Or Die (C64)

While Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater and the umpteen sequels it’s spawned have become the defacto standard for skateboarding games, ask anyone who spent time gaming on the Commodore 64 and they’ll tell you that Skate Or Die was where virtual cube-gleaming got its real start. Even for the C64 the Skate Or Die graphics and music were actually quite impressive, and it was definitely one of those games you could play with a group of friends since there were several two-player modes. That is, as long as you had a 2nd joystick, since no one wanted to get stuck playing with the keyboard.

And anyone who played Skate Or Die on the C64 has to remember this dude. He was the owner of the local skateshop and even though he appeared to be on the rough side of 40 going on 50, he still sported a wicked purple mohawk. His shop also served as the game’s main menu allowing you to keep track of high scores or enter various competitions. You made your selection by moving a cursor around the screen, and depending on where it was this dude would spit out rad skateboard phrases (all text-based of course) like “Don’cha like my ‘do’” whenever you passed over his mohawk. If I had to assemble a top ten list of C64 games, Skate Or Die would definitely be in there somewhere, and all these years later I can honestly say I still like that guy’s ‘do’.
