I give up. I can’t keep up. Mozilla Firefox has upgraded their browser to version 10.0. Didn’t version 4.0 come out in March of 2011?!

Most of the updates surround the handling of extension auto-updates and the refinements around the Orion code editor/scratchpad with new page and style inspectors, WebGL anti-aliasing and enhancements, CSS3D transforms and an easier <strike>thank you lord!</strike> method to sync with other browsers including the updated Android Firefox – also at version 10.0 today too which adds multi-touch gestures and other enhancements.

Simply put, this is a slight upgrade on Mozilla’s new 6 week or so upgrade path. But it’s on the path to an updated tab system in version 12 and leaner memory usage. So far, it is a good update for me. Click the bottom links to download your proper version for your desktop. Download via the Android Market for the upgrade for Android based tablets and phones.

Man, this is getting ridiculous! From March of this year when 4.0 was released, Mozilla has hit a new high gear and released version 8.0. Yes… 7 months, 4 major versions and Firefox is not hitting version 8 – something that took Microsoft almost a dozen years to do.

Firefox 8.0 adds the following improvements:

Add-ons installed by third party programs are now disabled by default

Added a one-time add-on selection dialog to manage previously installed add-ons

Added Twitter to the search bar for select locales. Additional locale support will be added in the future

Added a preference to load tabs on demand, improving start-up time when windows are restored

Improved performance and memory handling when using and elements

Added CORS support for cross-domain textures in WebGL

Added support for HTML5 context menus

Added support for insertAdjacentHTML

Improved CSS hyphen support for many languages

Improved WebSocket support

Fixed several stability issues

Fixed several security issues

So far, I’ve seen improvements in memory. And knowing that it’s also more secure, I’ll rest easier. You know where to get it, but just in case: Download Firefox 8.0 from Mozilla.org

Also updated for Android too.

App Tabs: Take sites you always keep open—like Web mail—off your tab bar and give them a permanent home in your browser.
Organize your Tabs with Panorama: Too many tabs? Reclaim your browser from tab clutter! Panorama lets you drag and drop your tabs into manageable groups that you can organize, name and arrange in a fun and visual way.
Scratchpad: One of our new, built-in developer tools, Scratchpad lets you build and test snippets of JavaScript code right in the browser, saving you time and precious keystrokes.

I’m already a fan of Scratchpad. And so far, it seems like Firefox 6.0 is a tad bit faster and also seems to use less RAM.

Looks like the guys over at Neowin must have been refreshing the nightly builds like mad (I know I have) but Mozilla has released the final build of Firefox 4.0 for Linux, OS X and Windows today. Boasting a faster rendering speed, an improved UI and <strike>so far in my personal usage</strike> lesser memory usage, it seems like the next round of browser wars has already started – Microsoft Internet Explorer 9 was released last week and Opera 11.10 was just released a few days ago.

MS unveils Internet Explorer 9 Beta and it's already a contender.

I actually like a Microsoft browser. There, I said it…

Microsoft unveiled their new Internet Explorer today, in beta form and it’s a definite leap above their prior 3 iterations of their browser easily. With HTML5 support, built-in integration with Windows 7 and 32-bit and 64-bit versions for Microsoft Vista and Windows 7 as well as support for hardware acceleration and a real clean interface, Internet Explorer 9 is nothing like the versions before it – it actually works well and lacks that sluggishness in the UI.

The improvements to Internet Explorer are as much about what you don’t see as what you do see. Internet Explorer 9 has a streamlined design, fewer dialog boxes to click through, more intuitive navigation, and many new features that speed up your web browsing experience. Features like Pinned Sites let you pin your favorite website directly to the taskbar for one-click access. Other features, like hardware acceleration, deliver an all-around faster browsing experience. With Internet Explorer 9, websites perform and feel more like the programs you use every day on your PC.

The bad part? If you’re still running Microsoft Windows XP, don’t even attempt it. And to be honest, the integration in Windows 7 is a tad bit more in-depth and seamless than with Windows Vista – but the experience is close enough between the two operating systems that I think it’s merely reflective on my like of Windows 7 and my intense dislike for Vista.

Seriously though? I’m impressed. It’s fast – I mean like Opera 10.6 fast – and the UI is not in the way at all. Combined with Adobe’s release today of their 64-bit Native Flash 10.1 Player nicknamed “Square” (download here), it seems like Internet Explorer might become an option once again for developers and people who have long abandoned Internet Explorer since the very early Mozilla/Opera days… like me.

Bravo Microsoft. You’ve all but shut up my typical hatred for all things Internet Explorer. Besides speed and support for new technologies though, let’s hope you’ve worked on the security of this browser just as well. That’s the other reason I disliked Internet Explorer.

Features include full browsing, high-performance virtual keyboard and Bluetooth 2.0+ EDR.

Designed with metallic body, it supports up to 10 hours of battery life and 230 hours of sleep mode time. Other features included two USB ports, D-SUB, SKYPE support, JetToolbar and voice recognition function.

Earlier in the week, Nokia came out with their PR1.01 and people were wondering when the “by Christmas” update that Nokia promised was coming. Well, question no more. Nokia’s PR1.1 update raises the Maemo 5 build to 2.2009.51-1.

First up is support for the Swiss keymat variant with hardware and virtual keyboard layouts supporting the combination of German, Italian and English characters. We’ll also see full compatibility with certain SIM cards from network operator 3. Although only a small number of SIM cards were impacted at the time, this release means the N900 is now fully compatible with 3 SIM cards.

Mail for Exchange also sees an update which will it allow it to work with Microsoft Exchange Server 2003. This should bring the possibility of Exchange integration to a much broader group of users.

Ovi Maps also gets the update treatment, with improvements made to search performance and route calculation. Beyond these major changes come a range of smaller usability improvements which have been worked into the release and are based on the excellent user feedback the team have received (keep it coming).

Microsoft Exchange 2003 support, an updated Ovi Maps, among other fixes that people have been plain out begging for since the initial release of the Nokia N900.

The rollout is being staged across multiple territories, so if you do not see it now, be patient. Read more about it at Nokia Connections or at the Nokia Maemo 5 Wiki.

Opera 10.5 Pre-alpha downloads for OS X and Windows shows promise with a new JavaScript engine and an optimized rendering engine.

I used to use Opera almost exclusively until Mozilla really got their stuff together – yes, Mozilla, not Firefox. I’ve watched Opera continue to grow, add features that people would usually copy but I didn’t really go back to it – it’s on my Nintendo Wii already and I occasionally test sites with it on the laptop. But Google Chrome had essentially what Opera was… the faster, sometimes better, yet quirky browser in my assortment of apps that could view content on the web.

Well, Opera 10.5 might just change all of that. Sporting an even newer look, functionality of the 10.x builds have been sorted out for better usability and there’s a speed increase due to a new JavaScript engine and an optimized rendering engine. Definitely worth checking out, but remember one thing… it’s still considered a pre-alpha software so it might do some wonky things.

[ Links: Opera 10.5 Windows Pre-Alpha Download, Opera 10.5 Mac OS X Pre-Alpha Download ]

With Apple Safari, Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome, alongside some other more esoteric web browsers, like the Mozilla based K-Meleon [ site here ] for instance, are great and it’s finally good to have options. But for another new player to enter the market, it better do something awesome or different.

Well, enter the Lunascape browser. It features not one, not two… but three browser engines in one. Lunascape includes the rendering engines for Internet Explorer, Firefox and Chrome/Safari all in one browser with the ability to switch between the rendering engines and use Firefox or Internet Explorer add-ons alongside the other engines.

Lunascape, the Triple Engine browser, now supports Triple Add-ons and provides you with more advanced yet easy-to-use interfaces. We consider this as an important step towards the unified browsing platform. With Lunascape, you can have all you need to interact with the Web in a single platform that is personalized just for you.

Lunascape is now compatible with the expanding array of Firefox add-ons in addition to the already supported Internet Explorer add-ons and Lunascape plug-ins. Transferring your add-ons from Firefox 3.5 is very easy.

Sounds rather good despite being Windows only at the moment and having a slightly slower than I’d like interface. But this is beta software with improvements forthcoming.
