Last May Wal-Mart launched “Common Cents Mobile,” one of many rebranded Sprint prepaid wireless services. Wal-mart also sells Straight Talk service, which runs on the Verizon and AT&T networks. Apparently to ensure T-Mobile doesn’t feel left out, Wal-mart’s now teaming with T-Mobile to launch a Wal-mart branded postpaid wireless phone service subbed “Wal-Mart Family Mobile.”

According to a merchandising VP at Wal-Mart, they’re launching a postpaid service, in part because there’s “a perception among customers that prepaid service doesn’t offer access to the best phones or the best network quality.”

RTL's Save Money Mondays has profiled Dealnews.com that collects Black Friday ads, online coupons, online specials, free Apple iPhone apps and overall will save you money.

Dealnews.com [ site here ] is how I start my day. The site collects not only which Apple iPhone apps are free that day or which sales are going on at that moment – some sales are 24-hour only and by the time I read all of my e-mail, I just don’t see them until it is way too late – but in preparation for the Christmas shopping season, Dealnews is collecting any/all of the Black Friday (November 27th) ads available as they come to light [ view here ]

In short, I love Dealnews.com. Combined with the fact they also collect coupons and coupon codes, online sales and specials, you just need to bookmark Dealnews.

Being up-to-date and/or being an early adopter in the realm of gadgets is very expensive. In this edition of Save Money Mondays, I’d love to share with you one of the places that collects a lot of software and hardware deals in one place for your perusal. I’ve been a fan of Deals2buy.com [ site here ] for years. I’ve bought my previous Aliph Jawbone 2 earpiece via a link from their site and saved about $45 dollars off of retail among other deals for software, coupons and other gadget deals over the years. Definitely a site worthy of bookmarking.

They also collect those hard to find Dell coupons as well.

Everybody loves Amazon.com, right? It’s convenient, it’s trusted, it’s huge and sometimes it’s the cheapest place to shop for certain items. And every now-and-then, it’s incredibly cheap. But those heavily discounted items can be hidden under all of the items offered at the Amazon site. And did you know that Amazon sometimes has coupons? That’s right, certain items can be bought for even a bit cheaper. But how?

Enter Top Hot Deal [ site here ] who brings to the table a unique way to save money via Amazon discount codes and percentages off on a site I use (honestly) at least twice a month for quite a few purchases. For instance, let’s say you’re looking for a belt you’re in need to replace. Hit up Top Hot Deal, click Amazon discount deals, then click Apparel & Accessories then click on (and I’m being greedy here) 90% discount. In my search via the site, I came up to a belt that could take a buckle for 77 cents in the first few search results.

Go to Amazon directly, search for belts. Then change to Men’s, then sort by price. That same item price still doesn’t initially show up. It was hidden a bit on the third or so page – the price on my initial find came up still under its original price of $18.95 instead of the killer 77 cent deal I found on the same belt. This isn’t saying that the Amazon.com search is <strike>a pain in the butt</strike> horribly flawed, but I found my experience via Top Hot Deal rather easy and quick.

Just wish I went to the site first when I just bought “The Lost Symbol”. Found a coupon that could have saved me a few more dollars. Live and learn I guess.

Note: Sorry for the delay on this week’s Save Money Monday feature. Due to a server issue, things got delayed but all is fine now.

Could the entry of Walmart into the arena of prepaid cellular wireless, a rapidly growing market sector in the US [ read more here ] be a real big game changer in terms of pricing, offers and signal an even bigger shift away from contract cellphone service?

The announcement Wednesday that Wal-Mart, the United States’ largest retailer, will offer a branded low-cost prepaid service, “Straight Talk,” at the $30 and $45 levels, could end up being the “tipping point for millions of consumers who are already considering moving away from expensive contract-based cell phone service,” according to New Millennium Research (NMRC) executive director Allen Hepner.

With average monthly contract plans reported to be about $81, the more than 140 million U.S. contract-based wireless customers who use less than 550 minutes a month may now have even more reason to consider switching to a less expensive cell phone option, particularly in a changing environment in which plans for 1,000 minutes are available through Wal-Mart for $30 per month, according to Hepner.

Highlights of the March 2009 and December 2008 NMRC surveys include the following:

Two out of five Americans with contract-based cell phones– are likely to cut back on their cell phones to save money if, as is widely expected, the economy gets worse over the next six months. (March 2009)

No fewer than 40 million Americans – 26 percent of consumers with contract-based cell phone service — are “more inclined today than … six months ago to look at a way to save money on your cell phone bill, such as by switching to a prepaid cell phone service.” (March 2009)

Of those Americans with cell phones, fewer than one in five (16 percent or nearly 29 million people) have a prepaid phone. Of the balance, 85 percent have “postpaid”/contract-based service where they pay a monthly fee. (The two percentages add up to more than 100 percent because of a small number of consumers who have both prepaid and postpaid cell phones.) (December 2008)

Only 44 percent of those age 18-24 years of age say they know when their contract-based wireless phone penalty ends. This percentage increases to 58 percent among those 25-34 and reaches its peak of 61 percent with those age 35-44. The percentage decreases somewhat to 55 percent for those aged 45-64 and declines sharply to 37 percent among those age 65 and over. (December 2008)

Apparently the NMRC (New Millennium Research) thinks that the Walmart prepaid cellphone market entry is the “tipping point” that could lead to a serious game changer.

This and T-Mobile’s upcoming “Project Dark/Black” could definitely mean better competition as far as pricing goes. And for the consumer… that’s a good thing. But then again, Walmart did enter into the electronic music store business and it didn’t quite slow down the Apple iTunes Music Store either.

Freshdeals.com offers a new way to save money by asking members, logging in via Facebook and finding exclusive deals on their site. Worth a second look to find "Fresh Deals".

Keeping up with the newest technology is expensive. Being in the know about what is already out and how it compares to what’s coming down the pipe and ultimately what’s the cheapest you can find that newest thing you might be obsessing over is just downright time consuming. Not all of us are or have a direct line to a “gadget guru” that can answer all of our questions on the spot via a phone call or text message. And to be perfectly honest, given the current economic situation, unless you’re Bill Gates, each and every dollar counts.

If you have a Facebook account – really, by now, who doesn’t? – you can log into Freshdeals.com [ site here ] and ask questions that will be answered by other Freshdeals.com members that have found or saw products that you are also searching for for cheaper or give you insight as to why you wouldn’t want to buy that gadget in front of you because a newer version is coming out in a week or so. Also, the site itself gives you the opportunity to buy certain things at a much discounted price as well from business partners/websites that have what you’re looking for at a heavily discounted price.

Even without logging in and asking questions – that’s really the draw of the site though, to be able to interact with real live people – the site covers it all. From children’s clothing to plasma HDTV televisions to home decor and furniture to hair products and just about all points in-between. In fact, a quick glance around, I was able to locate some GNC Mega Mens Vitamin for $19 dollars, down from the typical $45 dollars I tend to spend with the $5 off coupon that I clip out from time to time. Saving $26 dollars that quickly makes Freshdeals.com a site worth a second look and worth my time. Give it a spin!
