Microsoft confirms... Windows Phone 7 will have tethering out of the gate. But will the carriers limit it?

Microsoft has confirmed that as with previous Windows phones, Windows 7 phones will come with tethering enabled right out of the box. Brandon Watson, Microsoft’s Director for Windows Phone 7, confirmed the feature on the Windows Weekly Podcast, but noted that it will be up to the carrier whether the function is enabled or not. Since Windows 7 phones will only arrive for GSM carriers this year, that means AT&T and T-Mobile. AT&T of course cripples such functionality in Android phones to <a href="force you to pay AT&T an extra toll whereas T-Mobile does not.

The question then is: how hard will Windows Phone 7 make getting around these restrictions?

Update: Tethering may not come ready out of the box. More on this in a bit.

While Verizon’s still not getting specific on the launch date of the functionality (“sometime in 2010″), they are getting specific on the price. According to comments made to Network World, tethering the Droid will cost you an extra $30 on top of the users pay for broadband already. That a month will still be capped at 5GB of usage a month. As we noted yesterday, Verizon’s also boosting the early termination fee for smartphones from $175 to $350 starting November 15.
